The UK’s complex networks of Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) are the veins and arteries upon which its political, social and economic well being depend. In our increasingly just-in-time society, the UK’s reliance on its CNI has continued to grow and our dependence is now such that even fleeting disruption is potentially disastrous.

In the coming years, the protection of critical infrastructure will be shaped by a growing understanding and practical experience of the threat posed by climate change and growing energy insecurity. These new drivers run in parallel with the global financial crisis. The economic downtown has the potential to contrict security spending and further reduce levels of redundancy within critical networks and services. As a result, the challenges for those protecting infrastructure seem destined to multiply.

In Europe, in the midst of these changing contexts, the new European Directive on Critical Infrastructure Protection has been created. Meanwhile, in the US the incoming administration has committed itself to massive investment in infrastructure. All of these factors combine to ensure that RUSI’s third annual critical infrastructure conference will be a timely event, not to be missed.

RUSI’s CNI conferences have now firmly established themselves as the forum for networking and discussion between senior policy makers and practitioners concerned with the UK’s CNI across the public and private sectors.

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://2010.energynetworks.org/previous-events/240209-utility-street-works-seminar.html"><rss:title>24.02.09 Utility Street Works Seminar</rss:title><rss:link>http://2010.energynetworks.org/previous-events/240209-utility-street-works-seminar.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject></dc:subject>

Tuesday 24th February 2009
SBGI/ENA Utiliy Streetworks Seminar at ICE, London

The event focused on the skills challenge and celebrated the establishment of the National Skills Academy for Power. Coming on the eve of the vital third reading of the Energy Bill in the Lords (see below), it was an opportunity to think about the challenges we face as we consider the great demands of energy security, affordability and climate change.

The new Skills Minister Lord Young said "the energy distribution and transmission sector is vital to every area of life in the UK, therefore it is crucial that the skills challenge for the sector is met. I am delighted to have a chance to address those gathered at Well Connected on the successful progress being made through initiatives such as the National Skills Academy for Power."

He went on to say that "with the power sector facing a range of significant skills challenges, including strong competition for skilled people and massive infrastructure renewal, the Government is more committed than ever to working with employers to deliver the right skills at the right time and to the right standard."

The atmospheric venue - the Cabinet War Rooms in Whitehall - offered the assembled throng a metaphor for the battles we will face to shape our energy future. Appropriately enough, the reception was in the ‘Harmsworth Room’ which housed the generators that powered key points in Whitehall during WWII and still contains all the dials and levers, which evoked fond memories for many guests.

Also on display was a reference to the room in a press clipping from the ‘Electricity Industry Board Newsletter’ of 1965. So the Bulletin has an eminent precursor and one that is immortalised in such an august building!

The event saw a record number of attendees and the atmosphere and talk was varied and interesting. It bodes well for Well Connected 9 next spring.

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://2010.energynetworks.org/previous-events/08-100908-iet-course-on-distributed-generation-systems.html"><rss:title>08 - 10.09.08 IET Course on Distributed Generation Systems</rss:title><rss:link>http://2010.energynetworks.org/previous-events/08-100908-iet-course-on-distributed-generation-systems.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject></dc:subject>

This event aims to provide engineers with an appreciation of the technical issues relating to distributed generation.
